Matthew McConaughey Lived In Peru For 22 Days As A Guy Named Mateo

(BroBible)
Matthew McConaughey revealed he once went completely off the grid in Peru for 22 days, living without electricity under the name ‘Mateo.’ He describes it as a formative experience that shaped who he is.

Listen. Most people go to Peru, see Machu Picchu, eat some ceviche, buy a poncho they’ll never wear again, and fly home. Matthew McConaughey went to Peru, renamed himself Mateo, and vanished into the jungle for 22 days without electricity.

Not Matthew. Mateo. The man filed a legal name change in his own head and committed to it.

And here’s the thing: this is not surprising. Not even a little. This is the most Matthew McConaughey sentence ever constructed besides alright, alright, alright…and it still somehow undersells how Matthew McConaughey this actually is. The guy who wrote a memoir called Greenlights and spent a chapter describing his own chest hair as a spiritual experience also apparently needed 22 days in South America as a fictional person to get his head right. Of course he did.

I’m not even mocking it. I genuinely respect the commitment. Most of us handle a life crisis by eating bad at Chipotle and rewatching The Office. This man said: new country, new name, no outlets. Mateo doesn’t own a phone charger. Mateo doesn’t have a publicist. Mateo eats whatever Mateo finds.

The real crime is that he came back. Mateo would have been so much more interesting.
