A California mayor just resigned because he was a Chinese agent. Not allegedly. Not “sources close to the investigation.” Admitted it. Packed up his stuff and left.
I need someone to explain the career arc here. You run for city council, win, become mayor, and somewhere in between ribbon cuttings and arguing about parking variance requests you are ALSO filing reports back to Beijing. About what? Pothole repair timelines? The city’s stance on community garden permits?
The part that gets me is the resignation. Just resigned. Like he got caught expensing a personal lunch. “Well, the jig is up, effective immediately I will be stepping down from my role as mayor and foreign intelligence asset.”
I have done some embarrassing things in my life. Some real bottom-of-the-barrel stuff I will take to my grave. But I have never had to send an email resigning from two jobs at the same time where one of the jobs was spy for a foreign government.
Not even close to the wildest part. The wildest part is that this was a city in California. China didn’t need a spy there. Half the city council probably would have just told them whatever they wanted to know for free.
